This Luminaria piece is personal in a way that much of my work has not been. After my first son Dashiell was killed in 2000, we got involved with a support group for grieving parents. It did help, and I'm glad we found it. One of the women there talked about people who told her that she loved her child more than Jesus, and that's why he was taken from her. It was horrible, I was shocked that anyone could say such a thing. But I guess not really surprised. Too many people confuse their fundamentalism and hatred with religious beliefs.
